Fucking Lucas. I never realised how apt that saying is until tonight. I've just been stuck for 30 mins in a deserted car park in -2°C wearing only water shoes, tracksuit bottoms and light hoody after losing all lights and power. Got her up and running again (dodgy 30A cable in the engine bay - may need attention later) but I spent a good 20mins inside the dash looking for an ignition fault. My feet are like ice blocks. Curses for being lazy and taking the first car on the driveway, the Alfa never has electrical problems.

If your choices for a fault in a Lucas'ey car are between "simple, but idiotic", and "failure due to complexity", always bet heavier on #1. Germans are usually the reverse.

Oh I've got loads in my heater system, it has built in delivery system that auto-dispenses just when I need it most

Ah Landys... How I love hate love hate them. Our old RR Classic used to hate starting when it was wet... eventually fixed it by covering the ignition coil with 10w-30 every week to keep the moisture out. And the blower was turned on by attaching 2 wires under the dash... Good times.

As somebody who has both German and British cars, there is so much truth in this! At least simple-but-idiotic gives you a fighting chance at fixing it at the roadside. From experience, the French manage to be complex, but idiotic.

I have a feeling that in a year or two, this will sound awfully familiar to me. As yet I'm soldiering on with on-the-fly electrical work. She's fine in the wet, but during this cold snap she's really suffered. Condensation maybe...?

Probably. Get some wd40 and spray it on the coil. Is your Rover a diesel or V8 petrol? (I don't know jack about diesel Rovers)

Shame, 300tdi. It's ex-RAF, and they seem to prefer replacing rather than fixing, I guess I should thank all the UK taxpayers for a very clean and tidy engine bay. I've got some spare time tomorrow so I'm just gonna get under there and pull what I can, clean, and replace it all nice and tight, with a good dollop of high-temp grease where needed.
